Tips on Driving through a Construction Zone

We’ve all been there – you turn the corner on your normal drive to work and boom! a construction zone has popped up seemingly overnight. Your first inclination is to speed through it as fast as you can to not be late for work – but in doing so you’ll be putting yourself, your car and workers in harm’s way. It’s important to take special safety measures when driving through any construction zone, big or small. At Yark Collision Center in Toledo, OH, we understand how important it is to drive carefully and safely through these zones and have compiled a list of tips to help you do so.

Tip #1: Expect the Unexpected

In construction zones, things are dynamically changing as the construction makes progress. Even if you’ve driven through this zone every day for the past week, things may be different today. Be aware and expectant of changes such as lane shifts, or new detours and respond accordingly. Don’t allow complacency to take over because you might miss a key change in route or speed that is necessary to follow to get through the zone safely.

Tip #2: Pay Attention to Signs and Flaggers

The signs that are posted in construction zones are meant to inform you of key details in how to drive safely through a construction zone, such as an upcoming detour or a reduction in speed. These signs need to be adhered to for all involved, both for you as the driver and for the construction worker. Similarly, flaggers (construction workers who wave you through/give you directions) hold the same power as signs and need to be obeyed as well.

Tip #3: Keep a Safe Distance

There are multiple things going on while in a construction zone – barriers, trucks, equipment, machinery, and more. Be sure to keep a safe distance from these items to keep you out of harm’s way. Similarly, keeping a safe distance between you and the car in front of you will help ensure that you will have enough room to stop if you need to suddenly and to avoid a crash.

Tip #4: Stay Calm and Patient

Above all, keeping a level head in a construction zone will help you get through it as safely as possible. Construction zones are not always the fastest thing to get through, so even though they might make you run late, stay calm throughout the process, and stay focused on your destination.
