With School Back In Session, Kid Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility

With school back in session, it’s important to be well versed in road safety and how to be safe not only as a pedestrian, but as a driver too. Here are some ways to stay safe while driving and protect the lives of our little ones.

Eliminate Distractions

Children will cross the road unexpectedly and without warning. Sometimes, they can even emerge from between two parked cars and you are going to need to think fast.

Taking your eyes off the road even for a second can greatly increase your chance of hurting somebody. Put away the cellphone and eliminate any distractions that have your attention while driving.

Teach Your Child

It is important that you take time to teach your children about traffic safety. They should understand what the marked crosswalk and corners are for.

This is especially important to keep kids safe in school zones. Intersections are the safest place for a child to cross. In fact, the majority of children pedestrian deaths tend to occur outside of an intersection.

Always Come to a Complete Stop

Too many drivers roll through stop signs in neighborhoods and school zones. One of our best school zone driving tips is always to come to a complete stop. While stopped, check for children on the sidewalk and in the crosswalk before moving on. Pay attention to the behavior of other drivers who may see a pedestrian you don’t.

Follow the Rules

More than anything, when you head to pick up or drop off your child at school, follow all the rules and regulations. If you aren’t sure what the proper drop-off or pick-up practices are, ask someone. With so many children to keep track of during this time, an accident can be right around the corner.
