Take the Time to do Some Fall Car Care – Here are Some Tips

Fall car care month is extremely important, Taking the time to perform some basic car maintenance can go a long way to extending the life of your vehicle. Here are some important car care tips we’ve put together for you.

Check the Fluids

Make sure that you check all the fluids in your vehicle. This should include the oil, brake fluid, power steering and transmission fluid. Don’t neglect the windshield washer fluid as well as your antifreeze. Review your owner’s manual for instructions on how to check each of these fluids and replacement if need be.

Inspect the Battery

Fall is a great time to give your battery an inspection. The connection should be clean, corrosion-free and tight. If your battery needs to be replaced, don’t hesitate to follow through.

Look Over Hoses and Belts

Another area you want to inspect is your hoses and belts. If they are cracked, frayed, loose, brittle or showing any signs of excessive wear, you need to replace them. Due to accessibility difficulty, some belts will need to be inspected and replaced by a mechanic. Again, you should review your owner’s manual and check your maintenance schedule against your maintenance history to see what repairs are due.

Test Your Heating & Cooling Systems

Test the cabin heating and cooling systems to ensure they provide optimal comfort. This is especially important as we go into the cooler months and you will be requiring the use of your defrost function. During the winter months, it’s a good idea occasionally to check your air conditioning. You’d hate to be stuck with a broken A/C on the first day of summer.

Inspect Your Tires

Test all the tire pressures and inspect the tread carefully. If you notice any uneven wear, you might need an alignment. In addition, if anything seems out of the ordinary like bald spots or bulges, have the car looked at immediately. This is also a great time to get those winter tires out of storage and have them put on your vehicle.

Minor Inspections + Odds & Ends

There are a few other things you’ll want to inspect. Start with the wipers and ensure that you can see clearly when the windshield is wet. In addition, you want to make sure that all your lights and signals work. If any of these items need to be replaced, it will only cost a few dollars but it could prevent an accident in the future.

Since winter is right around the corner, take the time to make sure your winter supplies are in your car in time for snow. You’d hate to be in a mad dash for a window scraper when first snow hits.

Sometimes there is car care advice that you can’t follow through with on your own. Some of these items need to be inspected regularly but aren’t often done by anyone other than a professional.
