Heading out for a Summer Road Trip? Prep Your Car for Fun

Before you head out for that fun summer road trip, it’s a great idea to take the time preparing your car to avoid any breakdowns or delays that can ruin something you’ve been planning for months. Due to the extra heat of the season and the taxing conditions inherent with road trips, a lengthy road trip can be the breaking point for a car in poor mechanical condition. The care you put into your car before you set off will what determine whether you have the time of your life or a road trip you’ll regret. Follow our simple summer road trip advice to ensure that you and your car arrive at its destination seamlessly and in one piece.

Best Tips for Summer Road Trip Prep

  1. Perform Basic Maintenance. Proper fluid levels are important during daily driving but can make or break during demanding driving. Use your owner’s manual as a guide to check every fluid level you can. Top off the fluids that are low, and have fluid changed if you’re due. Take into account the miles you’ll be traveling and consider getting an early fluid change if you’d like to avoid having to get one on the road. Make sure the wipers and all fluids have been checked.
  2. Inspect the battery and bulbs. Make sure it has clean terminals and that it is holding a strong charge. Replace any burned out bulbs to avoid getting pulled over and bring extras with you on the road.
  3. Inspect your tires. Look for any tears or bulges in the sidewall. There should be plenty of tread left on the tires. If you need to replace them, be sure to head to the shop before the road trip.
  4. Pack for emergencies. Always pack emergency supplies in your vehicle in case there is an accident or unexpected medical issue. Your emergency kit should include a flashlight, blanket, basic tools, and a first-aid kit. It is always wise to have extra water and snacks in the car as well, just in case you get stranded.
  5. Don’t overpack or underpack. You will want to reference your vehicle’s load capacity to be sure you haven’t loaded too much weight in the car. If you’ll be spending a lot of time in your car, be sure you pack accordingly. Extra phone chargers, games for the kids, batteries, books, blankets, and other comforts will be much appreciated as you’ve been on the road for hours.
  6. Be sure to map your route. Using a GPS is a great way to navigate the course ahead. It also helps you to find the things you need such as fuel and restaurants.
