Dusk and dawn are probably the two most dangerous times of the day to find yourself behind the wheel of a vehicle. As the sun is directly at the horizon, it reduces visibility and causes glare, so you’re not able to see pedestrians other road users and even the road surface itself as well as other times of the day.
The contrast between the dark road and bright sky can often catch even the most experienced of drivers off guard. Here are a few tips to remain safe when driving at dusk and dawn.
For starters, you should turn your headlights on before it gets completely dark. They provide additional illumination for you and make your car easier to spot for other road users. Second, always reduce your speed to compensate for the reduced visibility. Slowing down gives you more time to brake and turn, and those extra few seconds can prove to be the difference between life and death. Make sure to check your rearview mirror for rapidly approaching vehicles. Chances are the person behind you hasn’t spotted you yet if they’re not slowing down and adjusting their speed. Last but not least, try to avoid looking directly at the sun or into oncoming traffic’s headlights.
Clean your windshield, your rear window and even your headlights. Accumulated dust can cause glare and obscure your view. Take a pair of sunglasses with you and use them at your own discretion. If you’re headed toward the sun, put them on, otherwise take them off to increase visibility. Knowing where you’re going helps as well. If you don’t know the area, do some research before driving off or navigate using your built-in GPS or use a navigation app on your phone with your phone secured in a dashboard mount. GPS will show you incoming corners and even warn you of traffic jams if it’s a newer unit.
