How to Prevent Hail Damage to Your Vehicle

We spend time preparing for all kinds of major life events. We know what to do in the case of a snowstorm or tornado, but rarely do we know how to prevent hail damage to our vehicles. The truth is that hail damage is hard to expect and can take a toll on your car’s body work. While your vehicle might have hail damage insurance coverage, it is still wise to know how to protect yourself.

Park in a Garage or Under a Carport

By parking under a covering, you are saving yourself from having to get unnecessary repairs in the future. Even when you travel into work, it would be wise to invest in the nearby parking garage instead of street parking if a storm is approaching.

Find Temporary Shelter

If you are out and about during a storm but fearful you won’t make it home in time, look for some temporary shelter. This could be a mall where there is a parking garage. Then, just hang tight and wait for the threat to pass. You can also consider a large pop-up tent meant for shelter. Just be sure to securely fasten the shelter to the ground or another solid object so it doesn’t blow away or blow into your vehicle.

Cover the Car

If all else fails, get something to put on top of your car, whether you use blankets, or a car cover specifically designed for hail coverage. You may even want to consider using some tape or tie-downs to keep the wind from getting a hold of it. While the tape might be tricky to get off without a little elbow grease, if you attach it under the car you won’t have to worry about paint damage.
