5 Dangerous Driving Habits You Should Fix To Help Prevent an Accident

When you do a lot of driving, it’s easy to take things for granted and forget that it can be a very dangerous business. We tend to pick up bad habits over the years and think we’re more capable drivers than we are sometimes and that’s when we let our guard down and accidents happen.

Here we take a look at five of the most common bad habits drivers need to fix if they want to be safe:

  1. Driving under the influence. Driving when drunk or under the influence of drugs is the biggest killer on our roads today. It’s easy to get a little carried away when we’re out socializing and so when it comes time to driving home, we can sometimes make mistakes. If you are driving after an event where there’s alcohol, it’s always better to drink absolutely nothing at all than risk falling under the influence. Remember it’s not just about how much you drink but whether you’ve eaten and how susceptible you are to the effects of alcohol. Call a ride or a friend to get home safe.
  2. Driving when you’re tired. When your eyes are heavy because you need sleep, it’s hard to focus on the road. Many serious car accidents are caused by someone falling asleep at the wheel. It takes just a split second for a driver to lose control of their vehicle if they’re struggling to stay awake. Pull over and try and grab a quick power nap followed by a strong coffee before getting back on the road.
  3. Driving too fast. There’s absolutely no need to drive more than a few miles per hour faster than the speed limit on whatever road you’re taking. Speeding is the second cause of deaths on the road. If you have a flashy sports car and just want to experience it at full-throttle; go to a racetrack and knock yourself out. Never take risks with speed on the road by making sure you are always within the recommended limits.
  4. Driving when distracted. If you have your kids in the back of the car and they are acting out or you are involved in a heated dispute with your partner when you’re behind the wheel; accidents can happen. When you’re driving it’s crucial that you’re always present in what you’re doing and not paying attention to peripheral activity, no matter how annoying it can be. If you need to stop chaos getting out of control in your car, pull over and give your passengers a talking to.
  5. Tailgaiting. A common cause of accidents on our roads is cars driving too close to the vehicle in front of them. When you are too close to another vehicle, you are not able to respond to any last-second braking. If you’re behind another vehicle, you can’t see what they can see and so you’re risking having to take drastic action to avoid a collision. Remember that if you are driving the vehicle that goes into the back of another, you are much more likely to be liable to damages.
